What is a doula?
A doula is a specially trained birth support person. She will provide important one on one emotional support, information, care and advice to help you feel more confident and guide you through your own unique transition through labour and birth to parenting and beyond.
From support through pregnancy and birth choices to helping you settle in through the post natal period. Doulas have been shown to reduce labour time and medical intervention during childbirth and more importantly enhance the birth experience to be a positive transition into parenting.
A doula supports the birth you want, helps you with the unexpected, assists in unmedicated birth and often help decrease the length of labor. Doulas offer physical and emotional support not only for the mum but the dad as well.
Doulas improve the overall outcome and experience of women giving birth. Studies have shown that when women use a doula during labour, there are many benefits:
50% decrease in caesarean sections
25% decrease in the length of labour
30% decrease in use of forceps
40% decrease in use of oxytocin to speed labour up
60% decrease in use of epidurals
30% decrease in use of pain medications
